Interview with Rebecca Maizel

Check out this amazing interview with Rebecca!

Could you describe both your pre-and-post contract revision process? What did you learn along the way? How did you feel at each stage? What advice do you have for other writers on the subject of revision?

The biggest learning curve? I didn't realize how tactile I was; I actually need a pen and paper. Once I was contracted, I became super aware of every choice I was making and every word on the page.

When I knew that people were paying me for writing and it was no longer some pipe dream from behind the bar, I was super aware of my process of revision (I was a bartender for 11 years).

At that point, I had to identify and find my process. Other people were involved, giving me notes -- people that had literally read thousands of books. That pressure was very hard to take, so I paid attention to what I was putting on the page, and how I was choosing to do it.

My process goes something like this: I type as much as I can, usually get blocked, hand write, input those handwritten pages into the computer, and then start printing -- and repeat. I have to see my work on the printed page instead of on the computer.

Something about those infinite number of computer pages usually blocks me about half way into the second act. So when I print, I am able to see on the page what my book will look like.

I always knew that I needed to see my work on the page in front of me, I was just never aware of the repetition of my process. I hope other people do this and I don't sound loony tunes. I also read aloud when things sound clunky. I should probably be reading this interview aloud.

Another aspect of my revising process is where I start my novel. Usually what I think is my beginning chapter, usually isn't. It usually ends up being what I needed to write to get into the book. The faux opening expresses the voice of the book, but as I revise and think of the world I am setting up, I usually find a better way to open. Sometimes I need help.

Boy did this blow me away

Now this is what I"m talking about. This is what I have been waiting for way too long and it was exactly what I wanted. Picking up right after the dramatic events of the predecessor Stolen Nights follows Lena and Vicken as she struggles to keep Rhode within her grasp but deny their love whilst realises her true feeling for Justin.

Boy did this blow me away. This is a really deep emotional book. The plot was amazing. The amount of time and effort that was poured into this book and the plot is absolutely amazing and this was well worth the wait. The plot was so delicate yet extravagant and dramatised at the same time that it simply mesmerised, sending you into a trance, from which you could not break. It was glued to this.

The writing was amazing as ever. Maizel ha this beautiful simplicity to her writing that makes it a absolute pleasure to read. The writing just flowed so smoothly and perfectly like a river so to speak and it just sent you reeling in awe. The combination of the plot with the writing was an utter match made in heaven.

Now this goes in a complete different direction introducing Vicken, who we TBH don't particularly like from book 1 and in this book that completely changes. As he becomes a main character you get let into his head and you really warm to him. You realise what he is truly like and you get to hear his story which is extremely different to Lena's.

This book verges a lot more onto the magic side, and I really like that, because I always find that YA fiction seems to try and stay to real and I am perfectly happy with a full blown Fantasy because who doesn't love a bit of magic. This is definitely a good to read.

After waiting for this was so long I was not disappointed and I honestly can say this book was a pure and utter pleasure to sink my fangs into. (if you'll pardon the pun)

Thanks Excellent Reads

Stolen Nights, the second book of Vampire Queen, IS AWESOME!

Stolen Nights, the second book of Vampire Queen, IS AWESOME! Rebecca Maizel really did it with Stolen Nights! I really, really, really loved it! I’m so thankful to JP for introducing Infinite Days to me. :P
I said in my review of Infinite Days that I really wish that there’ll be more kick-ass actions in the book. And heck! My wish was granted! I didn’t get bored since from the start, there’s ‘actions’. And all my wish were there. I get to see Rhode again. Suleen. Tony (even though it’s just mere seconds).
Anyhow, the plot was really good. I mean, it’s really unique. With Lenah wanting to be human again after being made a Vampire without having a choice, from there, I know this story was really a unique one. I did not expect the characters and the story to be like that. I didn’t imagine it, didn’t thought of it. I hated the Aeris for keeping Lenah and Rhode away from each other. And I really hate the options they gave Lenah. :(
I didn’t like Justin ever since book one. And even though there’s a good reason for THAT, I still don’t like him. I’m really on TEAM RHODE.
Rhode, I love Rhode. Sheesh! No I’m not rating the book because of Rhode. I like him very much because he’s really a sweet guy. And the sparks between him and Lenah? WOW. I just kept grinning. Right there and then, I want him to be happy with Lenah. He already lost too much and in pain for a long time. He deserves happiness.
And there’s Vicken! Omg. I like him too. I like him now that he’s Human. He’s funny, supportive, protective, and a lot more. I really enjoyed reading the book because of Vicken.

Stolen Nights, the second book of Vampire Queen, IS AWESOME! Rebecca Maizel really did it with Stolen Nights! I really, really, really loved it! I'm so thankful to JP for introducing Infinite Days to me. :P

Remember my review in Infinite Days? I said I really wish that there'll be more kick-ass actions in the book. And heck! My wish was granted! I didn't get bored since from the start, there's 'actions'. And all my wish were there. I get to see Rhode again. Suleen. Tony (even though it's just mere seconds).

Anyhow, the plot was really good. I mean, it's really unique. With Lenah wanting to be human again after being made a Vampire without having a choice, from there, I know this story was really a unique one. A friend (yes, JP, it's you) already spoiled the book to me (Yes, yes, my fault for clicking the damn spoiler button) but still I can't wait to read it 2 days ago. I usually don't read spoilers cause I get lazy to finish a book, but Stolen Nights? I finished it in less than 10 hours! 8 hours to be exact cause I did some chores first.

So even knowing what happened to them because of the spoiler button (seriously?! Why did they invent spoiler button?!) I did not expect the characters and the story to be like that. I didn't imagine it, didn't thought of it. I hated the Aeris for keeping Lenah and Rhode away from each other. And I really hate the options they gave Lenah. :(

I didn't like Justin ever since book one. And even though he had a valid reason for THAT, I still don't like him. I'm really on TEAM RHODE.

Rhode, I love Rhode. Sheesh! No I'm not rating the book because of Rhode. I like him very much because he's really a sweet guy. And the sparks between him and Lenah? WOW. I just kept grinning. Lenah's choices were understandable, what I didn't understand was why she keeps hanging with Justin. What I really like was that she's connected to Rhode. She could see what's in Rhode's mind or just flashes of it. They are soulmates. So I really wish they'll still be together. I like that Lenah is a kick-ass character! She also do her spells like when she did when she was a vamp. Most books I've read says that once a vamp, you could not touch or do magic since they were undead. They don't have a life anymore and that's what I liked in SN too, vamps could do magic.

YES, I really want a third book. And I wonder when will there be a news about it. Seriously! How long should we wait for it?! >_<

OVERALL, 5 FREAKIN' STARS!!!

Throughout all my histories, I found no one I loved more than you...no one."
Those were some of Rhode's last words to me. The last time he would pronounce his love. The last time I would see his face.  It was the first time in 592 years I could take a breath.  Lie in the sun. Taste.
Rhode sacrificed himself so I, Lenah Beaudonte, could be human again. So I could stop the blood lust.  I never expected to fall in love with someone else that wasn't Rhode.  But Justin was...daring. Exciting. More beautiful than I could dream.
I never expected to be sixteen again...then again, I never expected my past to come back and haunt me...
Review by {Dive} Under the Cover
Diving in...
This is one of those books that I bought after I kept seeing in on blogs.  I will admit that while this cover is nice, it kind of looks like a child so that kind of threw me off.  There is another cover up on Amazon, so I don't know if this is an old cover or what.  Either way, I really enjoyed the book!

I love a good vampire story, but Maizel's take on it was very different.  First of all, Lenah is now suddenly human after being a vampire for nearly 600 years.  Secondly, the whole idea of her vampire coven was something unique.  As with most vampire stories, some of the "vampire rules" apply, but there are all new ones that are also unique to this particular series.  I always think it's refreshing to read a new spin on the vampire world.

The only thing that really bothered me about this story was how quickly Lenah seems to adjust to waking up in a world that is 100 years more advanced than it was when she went into hibernation before the change.  It seems more likely to me that it would take her weeks, if not longer, to learn all the things that she would need to know, etc... before she is just fine being on her own.

I don't even need to say how much I loved Justin because that's a given!  I also really liked some of the secondary characters, particularly Lenah's best friend.  He is definitely the one who helped her with some of her adjustment process, even if he didn't realize that's what he was doing.

I am actually glad that I just recently discovered this book since I don't have as long to wait for the next one.  I guess it's been quite some time for those of you who read this when it was first released!  I think that the twist at the end of the book is going to make for an excellent next book.  It will be interesting to see how things progress from this point.

This book was well written, I like how she blended the present with scenes from the past to give us a look into Lenah's life and her coven.  It was nice to get all these little details about Rhode, the other men and all the nuances of her vampire world.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good paranormal romance, especially if you like vampires.  It's a new spin on that world with a dash of fun, preppy, boarding school rich kids!

As far as content concerns go, there wasn't much profanity that I remember, normal YA stuff.  The normal YA kissing scenes, anything more is eluded to but not described.  Your run of the mill vampire blood, fight scenes, etc...

“Lenah Beaudonte should be dead. But having sacrificed herself to save another, she finds herself awakening with strange powers that are neither vampire nor human - and a new enemy on her trail. Review by Narrative Speaking

Remember that refreshing vampire novel called Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel that was published back in 2010?  Remember the shocking ending and how you couldn’t wait to read the sequel to find out what happened to Lena?  Well, NOW YOU CAN.  Well, at least if you live in the UK, make friends with someone in the UK who will send you a copy or order the UK version direct ;)  Obviously, it goes without saying that if you haven’t read Infinite Days, please go no further as you will encounter spoilers.  Alternatively, you can read my review for Infinite Dayhere if you’re interested.

This is by far one of the toughest reviews I’ve ever had to write because I cannot say ANYTHING about the plot.  Let’s just say that I had my fair share of theories on where I thought the story would go next (which was one of the driving forces behind me wanting to read the book) but WOW, by page fifteen, Rebecca had floored me.  Bravo girlie, it was the best ‘out of left field’ moment ever.  Once again, the novel throws up questions about who deserves forgiveness and if you can really achieve redemption after committing such unspeakable acts.  I wanted to feel sorry for Lenah and other characters in the book and whilst part of me did (I’m not a soulless monster!) a lot of me didn’t and that surprised me.  I didn’t harbour any ill will for Lenah et al but I felt like they were being served a healthy piece of justice pie and they should just suck it up.

Overall, I enjoyed Stolen Night a lot including the intentionally confusing prologue that paves the way for the next book in the series.  I do wonder if time travel will feature at some point (that’s the ONLY clanger I’m going to drop in this review!!) but I have no doubt that Rebecca will give us something amazing.    Stolen Night is a very worthy sequel with a profound quality that will have you reeling for days afterwards.

As an addendum, I have to say that I’m a little disappointed in the lack of fanfare that this book has received in the UK although I was happy to see it on the shelves a few days before the official release day.  Whilst I like the cover, I’m bitterly disappointed that it’s not a hardback like the first book and so now they don’t match on the shelves.  I do however like the redesign for the US paperbacks.

Stolen Night is the UK title and the book was published on 5th July, 2012.  It will be published in the US as Stolen Nights in January, 2013.  To find out more about Rebecca and her books, please click here to visit her website.  You can access extra content (including a play list) on MyKindaBooks here.
